Achilles Creative Series presents Upcoming Opening Reception
Friday, November 8, 2024 6:30pm-8:30pm
Exhibiting Artists John Slaughter & Jesse Poimboeuf
ENCHANTING NATURE John Slaughter and Jesse Poimboeuf
Press Release:
Opening night is Friday, November 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Exhibit will be on display through January 10.
Photographer John Slaughter has been exhibiting photographs for nearly half a century. His books, published by UL Press, include Grand Coteau, Catahoula, and Marfa and the Mystique of Far West Texas. This exhibit features exclusively images of the Brown Pelican taken in Florida, California and Louisiana. Named the official Louisiana state bird in 1966, the brown pelican resides in salt water coastal marine habitats and is often caricatured for its unusual, prehistoric appearance. These photographs will reveal their beauty and amazing flying abilities.
This year marks artist Jesse Poimboeuf's 53rd year exhibiting his work, which has been seen nationwide from galleries and alternative art spaces to museums such as the Hirshhorn in Washington D.C. The New Orleans native has lived in several parts of the U.S. including New York, Cincinnati and Denver and now calls Cecilia, La. home. Operating in a studio on the banks of Bayou Teche, Poimboeuf said his work is inspired by the "relentlessly brutal beauty of nature" that is ever-moving, ever-changing in all its forms and permutations "of which we are a part of- not apart from."
Poimboeuf has recently been working with Brian Kelly at UL Marais Press on a limited edition multi-color lithograph which will be included in the show.
Jeromy Young acquired The Frame Shop Gallery 912 from the beloved Roger Laurent in 2013. Jeromy and his wife, Jessica Moore renovated the gallery and have resumed the art shows that Roger was so devoted to. In addition Jessica is the curator for the show as well as the owner of Achilles Print Studio.
Achilles Print Studio and The Frame Shop Gallery 912 is located in Lafayette's Oil Center at 912 Coolidge St.
George Loli, renowned for his masterful use of watercolor, was also an amazing teacher. He knew how to get the best work out of his students, either as a Professor of Architecture and Design at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, or teaching children and adults here at Achilles Print Studio. His passion for drawing and painting everywhere that he went is what made him so good, and we were so lucky to have him as an instructor at Achilles. George had so many students throughout his life, so many people who admired him and his art. This exhibition of his work will be the first since 2017, and will encompass a wide range of his output, allowing the viewer a glimpse into the brilliant, visual meditations of George Loli.
George Loli was a dear friend to us, to a lot of us. He was such a wonderful artist, teacher, mentor and human being. He always brought a smile to the room; he was loved greatly. His passing is very surreal. We miss him so much. Thank you George for being such a beautiful person and friend. We will miss your visits and seeing you produce masterpieces. We will miss hanging out for your watercolor workshops and art classes. A true master and great friend, it's difficult to put into words. We love you George.. ~Jessica & Jeromy
We are very honored and grateful to exhibit his work. We hope you can join us and celebrate the artistic spirit and artwork of George Loli. Please help spread the word about this wonderful upcoming exhibition of his work. George Loli was loved greatly in our artist community and was a mentor to a lot of people here in Acadiana and throughout.
George Loli In Memory Biography and Artist Statement:
George Loli started painting and drawing at the early age of thirteen years old. By the time he was sixteen he was making religious paintings and frescoes in churches and cathedrals in Syria. Loli moved to Florence, Italy where he began his studies in architecture, earning a Dottore in Architecture from the university of Florence Italy at the same time attending drawing classes at the Accademia Di belle arte. After his studies in Italy were complete, Loli moved to New York City, where he worked for a year as an architectural designer before settling in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he taught at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette for 36 years in the Department of Architecture and Design, retiring in the summer of 2011.
George Loli continued his passion and interest in painting and drawing throughout his career, receiving national and international recognition in solo and group shows in Paris, France, Florence, Italy, and throughout Texas and Louisiana. Loli’s works, as well as that of his students have been represented in numerous publications and reviews in architecture and design, painting media and design books.
“Sketching, drawing and painting are the great passions of my life. When I draw, sketch or paint, my goal is not necessarily to produce beautiful artworks, but, moreover, to try to capture the quality and the spirit of a particular space. I search for balance, mood and light to help communicate the essence of that place and its architecture – changing palate, procedure and/or medium in order to do so.”
“Turning a corner in an unfamiliar environment, a village, city or town and becoming one with the space is what energizes me. Travelling and discovery become essential to the passion I feel when drawing or painting. Capturing the essence of a new environment, helping to satisfy the yearning for expressing and capturing that new experience, is essential to my expressions in art.”
"My goal is to see the entire world and to sketch and paint it... stone by stone" - George Loli
